Abstract

Obesity is a common health problem in Peru. In previous studies it has been found to be an important predictor for the development of an incisional hernia/eventration. Objective: To describe the characteristics of patients operated of incisional hernia/eventration at Clínica Internacional during the years 2019 to 2023. Methodology: A total of 50 patients were included during the study period according to the diagnosis established in the operative report and their characteristics were described (illness time, comorbidities, body mass index, etc.). Results: 20% of those operated on had a weight within normal values, 42% were overweight, and 38% were obese. It was also found that 12% had diabetes, 24% hypertension, 12% asthma and 40% were older adults. Discussion and conclusions: Obesity is an important factor associated with the development of eventrations; it was found that the highest percentage of patients were overweight and in second place were obesity. It is recommended to carry out a prospective study to identify the risk factors associated with the development of incisional hernia and to prevent them.
