Abstract

Cardiomyopathies are a group of diseases with primary or secondary etiology, characterized by alterations in the heart muscle (cardiac chamber dilation, myocardial hypertrophy, systolic and/or diastolic dysfunction), which have gained notoriety in recent years due to the development of new imaging techniques. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is a robust, gold-standard technique to evaluate cardiac morphology and tissue characterization, with very little intraobserver and interobserver variability. This tecnique provides very useful information allowing the identification of the underlying cause, not only to assess prognosis and differential diagnosis, but also, to guide treatment and evaluate adequate response to treatment.
