Chronic functional constipation is a common and complex neuromuscular pathology that affects a large population. One of the main pathophysiological mechanisms of this condition is defecatory dyssynergia or, as Rome IV describes, evacuation disorders, such as the inability to coordinate between the abdominal muscles. and those of the pelvic floor during defecation. A detailed clinical history, evaluating the characteristics of the feces and an adequate digital rectal exam are useful tools in the evaluation of a patient with defecation disorders. Clinical criteria for functional chronic constipation together with at least two abnormal functional tests are necessary to make an adequate diagnosis. Within treatment, biofeedback therapy is recommended as the first line of management of defecatory dyssynergia.
